The document, originally shared in person w/roughly a dozen #State Dept employees in early March, requested staff emails & other records with or about a host of individuals & organizations that track or write about foreign #disinformation — including #Atlantic #journalist #AnneApplebaum @anneapplebaum, fmr US #cybersecurity official #ChrisKrebs, & the #StanfordInternetObservatory — or have criticized #Trump & his allies, such as the conservative anti-Trump commentator #BillKristol.

Chris Krebs’ membership in Global Entry has been revoked, as reported yesterday by CNN: cnn.com/2025/04/30/politics/ch

The acts of revenge by President Trump against people who spoke the truth he does not want to hear are... utterly despicable.

The open letter to President Trump in support of Chris Krebs now has over 400 signatures. If you want to add yours, you can read more here: eff.org/press/releases/eff-lea

Risposta a Tinker ☀️

@tinker I don't know why people are surprised by this. As a gay guy in the field, i've spent most of my career around dudes who confuse tolerance for acceptance. And after over ten years in Austin, I can tell you that there are a lot of firms that are still aggressively hostile to women. One in particular with a nasty reputation for slipping women roofies at their Friday happy hour events.

I am revolted at how they supported the leperization of #chriskrebs though. I don't expect better from #RSAC given they are a mailing list masquerading as a security conference, but I do from the actual community.

Looks like Corporate #infosec has made it's choice.

#RSAC is filled with talks embracing AI and making it "secure".

And they invited and encouraged the Trump regime to spread its disinformation - fully sanctioned and encouraged by the conference leadership(and by conference attendees who laughed at the regime's jokes and lies and issued no challenges or stands during the talk).

With the ostracization of #ChrisKrebs by industry and the full embrace of Kristi Noem as a speaker, this was the moment that infosec made its bed.

Y'all lie in it now.

⚠️ Cybersecurity community defends Chris Krebs against DOJ investigation 🛡️🗳️

Over 40 leading infosec experts — including the EFF — have signed an open letter condemning the Trump-led DOJ probe into former CISA Director Chris Krebs.

Why it matters:
💥 They see the investigation as political retaliation
🛡️ Krebs was fired after affirming the 2020 election was secure
⚖️ The move undermines trust in cybersecurity leadership
🚨 Sends a chilling signal to those protecting digital democracy

This isn’t just about Krebs — it’s about preserving truth, trust, and independence in the infosec field.

Earlier this month, #Trump issued 2 #ExecutiveOrders revoking the #security clearances of #ChrisKrebs, who led #CISA under during Trump’s first term & rebutted his claims that the 2020 election had been rigged & stolen, & #MilesTaylor, who once served as chief of staff at the #DHS. Taylor anonymously wrote a NYT opinion essay in 2018 accusing Trump of rampant “amorality” & telling of an internal government “resistance.”

“It brings to mind the abuses of power that characterize #authoritarian nations, not the #UnitedStates. No matter one’s party or #politics, every American should reject the notion that the awesome #power of the presidency can be used to pursue individual vendettas. Behavior of this kind is more to be expected from a royal despot than the elected leader of a constitutional republic. This is the path of #autocracy, not #democracy.”

A number of prominent #Republicans, including several fmr members of the first #Trump admini, have signed an open letter decrying him for using his #power to punish 2 fmr admin officials who criticized him, likening his actions to those of a “royal despot.”

“For a president to personally & publicly direct the levers of the federal government against publicly named citizens for political reasons sets a new & perilous precedent in our republic,” the group wrote.

#ChrisKrebs, the top #cybersecurity official hired by Trump in his first term and targeted for special illegal persecution now, says he is going to fight.

He resigned from Sentinel One when his employer lost security clearances in punishment for hiring this very competent and ethical infosec professional.

Chris did his job but delivered news Trump did not like, which is that the US presidential election in 2020 was not hacked and that the Biden won legally.

That same day, #Trump also signed a memo targeting #MilesTaylor, a fmr US ofcl who wrote an opinion column & book critical of Trump under the pen name “Anonymous.”

In the Oval Office last week, Trump called #ChrisKrebs a “wiseguy” & mocked an appearance he had seen from Krebs on TV.

“He came out right after the election, which was a rigged election, a badly rigged election…this guy Krebs was saying, ‘Oh, the election was great, it was great,’” Trump said.

#ChrisKrebs joins…growing list of #universities & #LawFirms seeking to push back on #Trump’s efforts to [ab]use the office of the president to attack critics & opponents.
“It’s about the government pulling its levers to punish #dissent, to go after corporate interests & corporate relationships. It’s the same thing we’ve seen w/the law firms, they’ve gone after clearances, they’ve gone after contracts. It’s a novel & expansive strategy they are taking on & it should concern everyone,” Krebs said.
