Ninth Circuit Reverses Probation Sentence for Paige Thompson: reason.com/volokh/2025/03/18/n

As with the recent case involving Conor Brian Fitzpatrick (aka "Pompompurin"), the appellate court found that the district court's time-served plus probation sentence for Paige Thompson was too significant a departure from federal sentencing guidelines. Although the court could properly consider factors such as being transgender and autistic, they shouldn't have ignored other sentencing factors so much.

Wake up maga , the Trump administration cares more about the corporations than his voters;

“The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) abruptly dropped cases on Thursday against multiple companies that had previously been accused of hurting consumers.

Court filings indicate that the consumer watchdog has decided to dismiss lawsuits previously filed against Capital One, Rocket Homes, a unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and a student loan servicer. Just weeks earlier the CFPB accused Capital One of “cheating” millions of customers out of billions of dollars of interest payments.”

But on Thurs, the #Trump #CFPB dropped several complaints against financial institutions, including the ones for #CapitalOne & #RocketHomes.

“We welcome the CFPB’s decision to dismiss this action, which we strongly disputed,” a spokesperson for Capital One said in an emailed statement.

In a statement, Rocket Homes said: “This case was a misrepresentation of the facts, as we have said from the day the suit was filed.”

If #capitalone demands a driver’s license photo before unlocking your account, be sure you DO NOT use the free download of PhotoWorks to slightly alter your eyes, nose, mouth and chin positions then use the Snipping Tool to save it (because you have to buy PhotoWorks to save the image) before upload to CapitalOne. If you do this it will screw up the facial recognition data they’re selling to 3rd parties.

Back in November my local bank notified me that my credit score had dropped—an identity thief had made seven credit applications in my name. After repeated failed attempts to reach #capitalone by phone (one of the banks the thief had applied to and who had made a hard pull on my credit report) I sent them a letter with a copy of my credit report and a description of the situation. I got a letter back from them today asking for…a letter and a copy of my credit report. #CreditScore #IdentityTheft

Well, finally it seems that #capitalone has worked out their issue. Now to fix all of my automatic transactions that I had to panic cancel when my pay didnt show up when it was supposed to.

Its inconvenient, but I guess it could have been worse. I hope everyone else who was impacted doesnt have any issues getting things sorted.

This is why you always pay with a credit card

Yesterday morning around 10am, I got a notification of a charge on my credit card. I didn’t recognize it – it was about $10 at walmart.com. We generally do not patronize union-busting establishments (don’t ask me about my Amazon Prime account), so this was unusual. I called Capital One and they cancelled the card. This was frustrating, though necessary, since I know the number by heart and I’ve become somewhat attached to it.

By 1130, I had a notification on my phone that my card number on Google Pay had been updated so I could continue to use Google Pay even though my physical card was cancelled.

Noon today, my new card arrived via FedEx.

It’s really amazing that in barely more than 24 hours, the ONLY issue I have is having to memorize a new card number. Capital One even updated the number at many of my existing recurring payments, and provided a list of those they were not able to change themselves. I’m going to wait until I get an email saying they couldn’t charge my card because I’m lazy, but I appreciate the thought.

So, just one more reason to get a Capital One Venture X card. It’s about $400 a year but that comes with a $300 travel credit if you book through their service. It covered my Global Entry fee, and there are a ton of other benefits. It’s the best credit card I’ve ever used.

It’s too bad the CFPB will cease to exist in approximately five days.

“An explosive new lawsuit filed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) alleges that Capital One bank cheated its customers out of $2 billion. According to the lawsuit, Capital One deceived and abused its depositors, baiting them with promises of high interest rates before switching the terms and paying little interest. The CFPB claims that Capital One purposefully hid the truth about these accounts from customers and concealed the availability of a new product that paid much higher interest.”
