Fun fact: "Edge engineered/played/orchestrated/made the start up sound for the XO laptop which was made as part of the One Laptop Per Child initiative. Here is that sound. Only 4 seconds or so long and sounds exactly like Beautiful Day." -- https://u2start.com/topic/3859
The Linux Professional Institute (@LPI) just published an interview by Sugar Labs executive director Devin Ulibarri (@pikurasa) .

@Rusty @dragonarchitect I disagree re: webOS and FirefoxOS.
#webOS failed due to lack of market penetration (there was only like 1 Tablet from #hp) and #FirefoxOS failed because @mozillaofficial didn't even offer to sell devices to folks like me and @fuchsiii that wanted one.
Add to that the absurdity that #Mozilla basically expected carriers (!!) to maintain and provide the #AppStore|s themselves and you get market fracturing worse than the "P.R." #China (!!!)…
It was mismanaged and self-sabotaged in the worst possible way.
The #Duopoly of #Android & #iOS wasn't unavoidable, but an outcome of #SelfSabotage and halfassed non-commitment by competitors!
Noooooo, my #OLPC XO4 Touch shipping is not going well. Thanks, #Germany...
> Hello,
Thank you for purchasing this laptop from our store. Unfortunately, I regret to inform you that Germany has rejected the parcel as it contains a lithium battery, and it has been returned to us.
As the laptop cannot be shipped with the battery, I can either resend it without the battery or cancel the sale and issue a full refund.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
Thank you.
2. Retrofit the 7.5" #olpc screen into the #PocketReform. Aside from modifying the screen bezel, working out the connector may be a lot of fun.
Alternatively, use the 7" #PixelQi screen (https://liliputing.com/first-look-at-pixel-qis-7-inch-display-new-netbooks-tablets/), if it can be sourced (at all).
(Only if the dimensions work out - meaning, no complete case redesign.)
Ramy Awny Sultan is a self-taught electronics engineer from #Gaza with a multimedia degree from Palestine University. I know him from the #OLPC community. He isn't asking for money but needs help to escape Gaza and find a job. Do you know of any way to help?

I know Ramy from the #OneLaptopPerChild community. He told me he has a multimedia degree from Palestine University and 10 years of experience in electronics, medical equipment, electric/hybrid cars and electric bikes, maintenance and design of electronic devices, and solar energy, CNC & 3d printing, and PC maintenance/programming. He is willing to test to show his expertise in any of these subjects. Can you help connect him with anyone that can help? 2/
Curious what life might be like as a parent using the Sugar Learning Platform at home?
@pikurasa shares his reflections using Sugar both at home and in the classroom.

I wonder how a new #olpc built around a #RaspberryPi500 and Raspberry Pi display might work? Like a ruggedized Pi500 laptop?
Going back to #OLPC wiki.laptop.org I am reminded that after Bender and the Sugar team were kicked out, the entire wiki was scrubbed and pruned of all the volunteer user pages, including my own.
It was a kick to the face of so many volunteers who gave their time and energy toward something we all believed in, and a brick in the wall of bitterness that I now have about the intersection of capitalism and free software.
I upgraded my extremely early production #OLPC XO-1 from the very first production OS (18 ya), to the latest, just now. (I volunteered on the Firmware team)
The laptop now boots 20 times slower, and has a far worse boot-up experience.
There's a metaphor here on the state of software.
"I had an old computer that I was going to give to a family friend [...] His nine-year-old brother found out about it and wanted it for himself, so I installed the latest Sugar Learning Platform [...] He is pleased to have the same operating system (OS) used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) and enjoys playing Tux Kart." Thank you for your support of Sugar Labs!
It's been another great year of bringing Constructionism into classrooms in the US and around the world, empowering kids through computation and creation. We're so thankful for the support of our many volunteers, and we're grateful for our community of developers, teachers, and learners.
