Betting on the Oscars

The Oscar awards need more stats. Enough so the big gambling companies can make a huge amount of money off of the proceedings. In each category, I would like to see how the approximately 10 000 votes went, exactly. Then I could try placing a bet for Demi Moore winning best actress by a 1 000 votes or some such number.

Or you could bet on whether nominees win, place or show in their categories. You could even have an exactor or a triactor, like in horse racing. Of course it wouldn’t pay off as much because there are fewer nominees than horses in a horse race.

I’ve also heard there are ad campaigns for certain nominees to win. This should be made public for the purpose of gambling as well. Then gamblers could say well nominee A hardly campaigned at all whereas nominee B spent a small fortune on advertising. This information may be crucial for their wagering.

Then of course the best picture voting is done differently. It is actually a ranked ballot. That is where you rank the nominees from 1 to 10 from your favourite to your least favourite. First, the least favourite nominee is knocked out of the voting. Then the second least favourite is knocked out. All until one picture has 50% of the vote and is declared the winner.

You could use exactor and triactor betting on this. But, importantly, it would be a way to improve ranked ballot knowledge which is often used in politics. Like the Liberal Party of Canada is using in its vote for a leader to replace Justin Trudeau.

For better breakdowns of the voting, I think it is best for each voter to identify themselves in a category, for which they are most known for. Like actor, director, editor, producer, etc. Then we could break down each win further. Thus we could have the favourite actor’s actor, the favourite director’s actor, or the favourite producer’s editor. You would be able to bet in all categories.

Price Waterhouse Cooper have tabulated the results for many years, with only two people knowing the final result before the announcement. That system would have to change. Can’t Oscar use automated vote tabulators? If it’s good enough for politicians, then it should be good enough for the academy. Then we could do this more complicated numbers system that I would like to see at the Oscars.

Then betting advertisements would dominate the ads on the Oscars show. And perhaps more viewers would be enticed because they, personally, would have something to win or lose in the show. With all that betting and the stars, perhaps Oscars ratings wouldn’t slip any further.

#Movies #Film

I may have missed it but I haven't seen any mention of the #Oscars awards show airing tonight on #ABC @ 4pm Pacific Time here on SFBA.social.

I never watch the show live in order to avoid all of the lame jokes, time fillers & to just skip to the announcement of winners & (if they're interesting, the acceptance speeches) off of my DVR which is all set up to record the event while I watch something else.

I've seen all 10 of the movies nominated for #BestPicture and all of the movies for which an actor or actress has been nominated for a major award & my preferences (as opposed to my predictions) for the the winners (some but not all of which align with the predictions that I've read online) are as follows:

Best Movie: A Complete Unknown
Best Director: Jacques Audiard,** **Emilia Perez
Best Actor: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkan, A Real Pain
Best Actress: Demi Moore, The Substance
Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Perez

Ok, now that I've seen all 10 films that have been nominated for the #Oscar for #BestPicture this year, here is my entirely arbitrary ranking of these films in terms of how entertaining & involving I found them:

1) A Complete Unknown
2) Emilia Perez
3) I'm Still Here
4) Conclave
5) Anora
6) Dune: Part 2
7) The Brutalist
8) Wicked
9) Nickel Boys
10) The Substance

These are the movies that have won for Best Picture so far this year:

AARP: Movies For Grown Ups - A Complete Unknown
Golden Globes-- The Brutalist
SAG - Conclave
BAFTA - Conclave
Critics Choice - Anora
Directors Guild - Anora
Producers Guild - Anora

Rankings & predictions for the winner for the Oscar for Best Picture vary widely but Anora is currently being mentioned more than the others . . .

we'll see . . .

I just watched #EmiliaPerez -- the last of the 10 movies nominated for the #Oscar for #BestPicture that I've seen this year.

The movie was NOT as bad as the reviews I've read about it would lead anyone who has not seen to believe.

While far fetched, the plot held together & the behavior & motivation of the 3 major characters made sense thru the entire film for me.

The music was used sparingly &, for the most part, fit what was going on in the movie at the time, unlike #Wicked which I felt went too overboard w/the screaming (ie, singing) thru out the film w/o enough dialog & character/plot development.

The controversy regarding the trans actor's past comments aside, which will probably keep it (& her) from winning an #Oscar, I thought the film was deserving of a nod for Best Picture and her for Best Actress, although I don't think they'll win either award.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10, which is much higher that I thought I'd give it before I saw it & I'm going to buy the #DVD.

#Movies

I just finished watching #TheSubstance starring #DemiMoore for which she already has received a #GoldenGlobe for #BestActress in a #Musical or Comedy.

The #movie is truly #BIZZARE!!!! 😲

I initially thought it was intended as a #horror show but then it morphed into a #farce which had me laughing out loud at the ridiculousness if it. 🤣

It's #TheLastShowGirl (2024) meets #TheThing (1982) and the underlying question is: What price are you willing to pay for fame & beauty?" 🤔

I've now watched 8 out of the 10 #Oscar nominated films for #BestPicture this year and so far & The Substance is my favorite for the craziness & audacity of it all. 👏👏👏👏

I'd give it at least a 7 and maybe even an 8 out of 10 -- so call it a 7.5 which is a very high movie rating from me.

I know it won't win the Oscar -- #TheBrutalist which already won the Golden Globe for Best Picture will probably get it -- but IMO this film is better & I'm immediately adding it to my DVD buy list. 😎

I just watched the #NickelBoys (2024), a #GoldenGlobe & #Oscar Nominee for #BestPicture this year, at my local #AMC today.

The movie is about 2 #BlackKids who were incarcerated in an abusive to #ReformSchool in the south where later many unmarked graves of children who were held & killed there were later found.

The Nickel Boys is shown in a narrow TV like screen (not in widescreen) & is shot from a close-up perspective of each of the boys (and later one of them as an adult) mixed in with a montage of scenes relating to #JimCrow & the #CivilRights movement which helped to advance the arc of story.

While I found the cinematic approach lacked continuity, it was an interesting & enjoyed the movie overall. I'd give it a 6 for entertainment value & a 7 for it's unique artistic approach.

It didn't win the Golden Globe for Best Picture & I don't think it'll win the Oscar either but I think that it deserved the nomination.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch it where/whenever you can.
