Letztgenanntes Werkzeug empfahlen ursprünglich auch die Tails-Entwickler. Mittlerweile raten sie jedoch von seinem Einsatz ab. Stattdessen empfehlen sie das Konkurrenzwerkzeug Rufus. Die Installationsanleitungen auf ihren Seiten haben sie bereits entsprechend angepasst. Der Grund für diese Maßnahme liegt in den privaten Daten, die der balenaEtcher mittlerweile an seinen Hersteller sendet. Das Werkzeug wird von vielen Linux-Projekten und Seiten empfohlen, weil es besonders einfach zu bedienen ist und unter allen großen Betriebssystemen reibungslos läuft. Aus diesen Gründen empfahlen ihn die Tails-Entwickler seit 2019. Wie die Tails-Entwickler in ihrer Stellungnahme schreiben, hätte bereits kurz danach der balenaEtcher damit begonnen, Werbung einzublenden. Mit ihr wollte das hinter dem Tool stehende Unternehmen Balena etwas Geld verdienen und die Entwicklung finanzieren. Die Tails-Entwickler stuften die Werbeeinblendungen zunächst nicht als besonders problematisch ein. Seit dem letzten Jahr schickt das Tool allerdings den Namen des zu schreibenden Images sowie die Modellbezeichnung des USB-Sticks an Balena. Diese Datenweitergabe ist für das Tails-Projekt kritisch: Ihre Distribution soll explizit das anonyme Arbeiten im Internet erlauben. Durch die Datenweitergabe an Balena besteht das Risiko, dass die Informationen von Dritten missbraucht und so die Anonymität aufgeweicht wird. Den Tails-Entwicklern liegen zwar keine Informationen über erfolgte Angriffe auf Tails-Nutzer vor. Da sie aber ein Missbrauchspotential sehen, gingen sie vorbeugend auf die Suche nach einer Alternative zum balenaEtcher. Insgesamt haben sie sieben Alternativen unter die Lupe genommen und sich schließlich für Rufus entschieden. Es gibt allerdings noch eine Ausnahme: Da Rufus noch nicht auf macOS läuft, beschreibt die Online-Dokumentation für diese Systeme weiterhin die Installation über den balenaEtcher. Als Alternative rät das Tails-Team zum Kommandozeilenwerkzeug „dd“ oder dem Raspberry Pi Imager. Beim Einsatz von „dd“ sollte man allerdings dessen Parameter gut kennen und kontrollieren. Andernfalls besteht die Gefahr, dass ein Tippfehler das Hauptsystem überschreibt.

Neues Linux-Live-System, neues Glück? Spätestens dann stellt sich die Frage nach einem Tool, um das ISO auf einen Stick zu schieben. Die grafischen Tools leisten sich offenbar immer wieder Schnitzer beim Datenschutz oder funktionerien nicht. Also doch lieber nur noch dd benutzen? Worauf setzt ihr?

#Tails and the @torproject no longer recommend using #balenaEtcher to create bootable USB sticks:

The amount of pain I go through to actually obtain a shitty #Windows11 ISO...does anyone have a copy of 24H2 for this build I'm donating to someone in need or should I just tell them to take it to Micro Center and have them install it?

I'm not turning off my VPN or firewall rules to download the ISO from M$
I'm not installing Windows for the sole purpose of using Rufus to burn it to a flash drive
It seems WoeUSB is no longer maintained and #balenaetcher says it might not be the best for the job

I am NOT a compsci geek.

BUT I have managed to switch to #LinuxMint on a 2010 MacBook Air and it's a revelation. It auto-updates, it's fast, easy and the most relaxed time I've had with #Linux so far.

So, if anyone out there is thinking of switching, give it a go!

(oh, and if you're on Mac, you may need #BalenaEtcher to help the process)
