Intertwined guitar melodies, driving bass and pummeling drums generate tidal waves of sound that recalls classic instrumental rockers like The Ventures but with a contemporary twang reminiscent of The Sadies. Atomicos’ first record, Surfodelic, set the tone for the band - reverb drenched amps driven by twangy guitars. The new album, Fins Up!, does what every band’s sophomore record should, by taking that blueprint to its ultimate limit on tracks like “Ghost Pepper” and “Burnin’ Bales” before strapping themselves on a rocket to uncharted territory with the genre-agnostic closer: “To The Victor Goes The Spoils.” This album sees Atomicos writing songs inspired by professional wrestling (“Tope Suicida”), classic Disney movies (“Goof Troop”), and the secret superpowers of sharks (“Shark Sense.”) That love of sharks is echoed in both the title and the two-toned artwork of Fins Up! The album’s simplistic rendering acting like an animal crossing sign would; reminding the listener that the water’s fine, but you enter it at your own peril.
