#Columbia student #MohsenMahdawi is released from detention

Mohsen Mahdawi, a #ColumbiaUniversity student arrested & detained by masked #immigration agents after his naturalization interview in Vermont, has been #released from #detention while his case proceeds.

US District Judge Geoffrey Crawford said Wednesday that Mahdawi's detention for 2 weeks, "so far demonstrates great harm to a person who has been charged with no crime."

The #Postal Inspection Service is primarily tasked with maintaining the safety of the #mail system, investigating threats & attacks on postal workers & mail facilities & keeping illegal items — such narcotics & child pornography — out of the mail [because they’ve done such a great job at that 🤦🏼‍♀️].

Murphy questioned how the #Defense Dept could conduct the flights without working in concert w/ #DHS, which oversees #Immigration & Customs Enforcement & is tasked with overseeing detained migrants & executing their #deportations.

"What authority would DOD have to effectuate that deportation?" Murphy asked.

Judge Murphy in late March had issued a temporary restraining order [#TRO], which he later extended into an #injunction, restricting the DHS's ability to rapidly deport migrants to countries other than their own without allowing them to first raise concerns about their safety or potential #torture.

#DOJ atty Jonathan Guynn argued the #Trump admin had not violated the judge's orders because DHS did not "direct" the #Defense Dept to deport the 4 individuals.
