Have you ever wondered if there’s a #Fediverse alternative to platforms like #GoogleScholar or even publishers and hosts like Academia.edu? I believe the academic world is overdue for a revolution, which necessarily requires a move toward #decentralization and #openaccess to knowledge. Imagine a search/indexing engine that’s not just a tool for finding research but part of an entire ecosystem that replaces profit-driven publishers and centralized repositories.
@amassaro it's harder than you might think.
@tragiccommons I have no doubt about that. Yet, I believe that we’ve managed to develop many alternative projects (with various degree of success) on the fediverse, like PeerTube, Mastodon, Friendica, and Pixelfed. I think it’s time to start something similar in the academic field, perhaps something small but effective.
@amassaro Wikipedia until recently. We should support them.
@amassaro ah saw one of your other replies here: in principle, there's nothing stopping your university to start either it's own Preprint server or even journal. The only thing that costs something is storage (uni has already) and DOIs. Maybe in collaboration with your scientific society?
I remember some universities already do that, and it's the closest we could get in terms of decentralized, non-profit publishing.
@amassaro
remember Aaron Swartz
@amassaro OK, this problem wasn't created overnight and it won't be solved overnight, but as a baby step I"ll suggest that everyone reading this do at least one of the following: (1) make a Bookwyrm list with at least some scholarly books in it and tell us about it, (2) post a Bookwyrm list you made using the "Curated", "Open" or "Group" setting, and encourage people to suggest books on the topic of the list, or (3) find an existing Bookwyrm list with some interesting books and post it.
@amassaro I'll start with (1): Here is my Bookwyrm mathematics list: https://sfba.club/list/107/s/math . It is set to "Curated" so you can suggest books to add, so I guess it is a little bit of (2) as well. I also make a politics and political science list: https://sfba.club/list/108/s/politics (although given the topic the setting "Closed", meaning only I add to it, seems more fitting).
@amassaro As for (3) I didn't do a lot of searching but two I found are a history one at https://sfba.club/list/35/s/history and a Sociotechnical History Books one at https://sfba.club/list/86/s/sociotechnical-history-books . (I hope it is good etiquette to post these - if either of these is your list and you'd rather I delete this post, just let me know).
@amassaro Why do I think Bookwyrm might be even a little bit relevant to academic publishing or indexing academic publications? Well, to be honest I'm not sure my thinking went a lot beyond (a) it exists today with a variety of servers that anyone can make an account on, (b) especially for publications with an ISBN, it does have at least some ability to manage lists of them, comment on them, etc, (c) it is federated.
