Grachan Moncur III - Some Other Stuff

A seriously talented group—Moncur on trombone, Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Tony Williams on drums—in 1964.

All four compositions are by Moncur, and are definitely in a free-jazz mode, some more successful than others, at least to these ears. All are interesting…

Geri Allen Trio - Twenty One

Another pickup from the recent Blue Note 50% off sale, this 1994 set finds Allen (piano) joined by Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums), only available on Vinyl these days.

Go figure.

Anyway, if that particular combination of players doesn't excite you, see your doctor… or maybe just listen to these four great sides.

"Only You (And You Alone)" (often shortened to "Only You") is a #dooWop song composed by #BuckRam, the manager of #thePlatters, the group that made the song famous in the US, the UK and Belgium. The Platters's lead vocals are by #TonyWilliams. Other well-known versions have been recorded by #theHilltoppers, #FranckPourcel and #RingoStarr. American #countryMusic versions were released by #TravisTritt, #RebaMcEntire, #BobbyHatfield and #theStatlerBrothers.

The Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!

Major gear shift to this fusion milestone, featuring Williams (on drums, of course), John McLaughlin (guitar), and Larry Young (organ).

Heavily on the “rock" and/or free side of fusion, lots of tempo changes, lots of distortion on the guitar, as well as mic-saturating organ.

Miles Davis - E.S.P.

Miles second great quintet starts here in full, with Wayne Shorter (sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Tony Williams (drums), and Ron Carter (bass).

Very distinct from the first quintet, as you might expect, and definitely a bit more adventurous, with abbreviated heads and extensive soloing…

"The Great Pretender" is a popular song recorded by #thePlatters, with #TonyWilliams on lead vocals, and released as a single in November 1955. The words and music were written by #BuckRam, the Platters' manager and producer who was a successful songwriter before moving into producing and management. The song reached No. 1 on #Billboard's Top 100, and No. 5 on the UK charts. The song has been covered by a number of singers, most notably by #FreddieMercury.
