Two public transport ferries cross the icy waters of the Hamburg harbor on a winter morning, possibly during a shift change. Workers, perhaps from Airbus or the docks, head home from the night shift while others start their day. The sky glows with the soft hues of dawn, while towering cranes of the container terminal loom in the misty background, standing as symbols of the city’s maritime industry.

Golden lamp sunrise.

Photograph of a sunrise above a neighborhood lined with trees, utility poles, and gaslight-lamp style streetlights. The trees, poles, and streetlights are along the bottom frame and increase in height near the far right and left frame where the objects in view are much closer to the camera. The streetlights are on, glowing a warm golden light, and, due to foreshortening, run in a curved line from the middle-left frame to bottom center. The remainder of the frame is a sunrise sky filled with heavily textured clouds and patches of clear sky between the clouds. There is also a large patch of vague, smooth clouds in the top right corner. The textured clouds are highlighted rich orange-gold with darker purple-gold shadows. The patches of morning sky visible near the horizon are pale blue while those near the top of the frame are a darker purple-blue.

Sunrise on Lake Michigan from Loyola Beach, Chicago, 2021.

Photograph looking out on Lake Michigan where only the lake and sky are visible with no natural or man-made structures. The sun is rising but is still slightly below the horizon which creates an optical illusion of a bulging "second sun" just topping the horizon. The sky takes up the top third of the photo and is hazy near the horizon which, combined with the sunrise, creates dark reds that transition to orange near the top of the frame. The sun is in the top right frame, is yellow-white, and surrounded by vague star bursts. The lake takes up the lower two thirds of the frame and is dark blue but reflects the orange sky above giving it a purple to peach color. The water's surface is rippled and the ripples grow in density as they are foreshorten near the horizon. The suns casts a vertical "column or stack" of reflections on the lake's surface that are broken by the rippled water and foreshorten as they approach the horizon.
