Steve Earle, Guitar Town, 1986 on MCA Records

Earle’s debut album from the mid-eighties – note the proud “Digital Recording” stamp on the cover (where now you’d see “All Analog” promoted). Topped the country charts, and the title single made #7 on the country singles charts.

I think Earle’s really matured into a wonderful elder statesman of a certain kind of roots / Americana that is bigger than just country or rock charts – but you can see his strengths even through some of the 80s production. Here the label’s presenting him as some kind of John Cougar / Bruce Springsteen manque.

So Steve Earle (an American) released an album in 2000 called ""Transcendental Blues" that had a track "The Galway Girl." He had written it while a visitor to Galway (and in my opinion is just about the only enjoyable track on the whole album). An Irishman named Mundy covered it in 2008 with Sharon Shannon, who had played on the original. It became a huge hit in Ireland. In 2016, an estimated 15,000 people filled the streets of Galway to perform this song. Note: this is NOT the same song as "Galway Girl" by Ed Sheeran, though I like that, too.
