With the hour late enough that my #sewing machine could turn back into a pumpkin at any moment, the shell of Abby’s suede coat is done. Tomorrow I’ll try to power through as much of the lining as possible.

UPDATE: Finally, something worth reporting.

My multi-quilt project, which I have mentioned here before, is at the stage where all 14 mini-quilts are quilted, and each one has a hanging sleeve fully attached.

Next stage: labels. The person who commissioned the quilts wants each quilt to get a different label, based on the recipient (not just their name). I'm waiting on the content for the labels.

Do you know what this is?

This is the center front of a silk charmeuse bodice being cut on the bias.

I am starting to think I am crazy.

Bias cut silk dress dress here I come!

Putting in welted pockets on suede is… different. Unlike with most leather, you can’t use a hammer to set the seam when turned as it’ll crush the nap. So it’s all just finger pressed. If this were wool, I’d be horrified at the smooshey corners. But on suede this is as good as it’s getting. #sewing

Risposta a Sarah

@sarahatlee My first garment (and first proper followed pattern in general) was the Everyday Dress from Peppermint Magazine, after seeing someone else's and being inspired.

It's a free pattern, super simple, basically just one big front piece and one big back piece sewn together but plenty of sewalongs available in case of confusion. It taught me what a facing is, and it has pockets!

Love it, wear it all the time.

Garment makers: what items of clothing did you start with? I'd like to learn garment sewing and figure I should start with something simple.

Beginner friendly project suggestions welcome! (and I'm already comfortable with my sewing machine.)

photo of some potholders I made, just for funsies.

Okay, additional tool acquired for furniture reupholstery project. Singer 201 sewing machine. Runs, but needs to be oiled. Apparently it was working but now not moving correctly... clearly a lubrication issue. Will appy teak oil to the furniture part while waiting for sewing machine oil to arrive. No hardware stores in town stock it anymore (did not check the going out of business fabric store, though... heard it was pretty picked over). #project #diy #sewing

There was a little more tension on the bobbin than this suede that I’m working with really wants, so a couple more adjustments this morning before I get back to Abby’s coat.

Also, my eternal gratitude to the souls who wrote these old Singer manuals. #sewing

Before I vanish to acquire more fox photos next week… here is the companion fluff the maned wolf got. If you want to pick them up, I can send them on the way if bought before Monday. After that it will take about a week before I am back to send them to you.

They are a bit larger but still travel sized for backpacks. And I would be happy to send them on a journey around the world to you :neofoxheart:

Put on the sleeves, finished the rest of the inside seams, and am now putting on buttonholes on the little linen blouse. I'm doing them in this sparser and round way, which is nice enough with linen thread - it's a lot grippier than cotton thread, and on linen this holds up and feels pretty sturdy with far less fuss, since there's trillions of them...

Never mind the thrift flop bollocks, here's a FAST FASHION FLIP! 🧵

This is a completely restored sequined bag I got from a fleamarket for a couple of euros.

The bag, originally from Zara, was poorly stitched together and none of the inside seams were finished.

The flimsy frayed satin lining had so much static cling, it was icky to touch. So were the ugly plastic handles. 😬

The bag also couldn't be washed because of the cardboard uh... "interfacing".

The nasty foam plastic material inside reminded me of meat trays. Ew!

The whole interior needs to go in the trash!

Let's sew! 🧙‍♀️

First I completely restitched the bag's sequined exterior, cut off the fraying excess material and finished all seams with a short zigzag stitch.

Then I carefully washed it by hand. Sequins get surprisingly dirty over time and after the wash, they sparkled like brand new!

Meanwhile I made a new lining and straps from thick and sturdy bridal satin leftovers.

I stitched the new straps onto the seam allowance by going back and forth several times to secure them firmly in place before folding it over.

Because satin is so slippery, I had to stitch the seam allowance down before pinning it to the outer bag.

Then I attached the lining by hand with tiny stitches.

The handles stitched to the sturdy lining won't put strain on the sequined material, which makes this bag last a long time.

So happy with the neat finish! 🎉
