Does anyone have any recommendations for a label printer for use from Linux? I'd like to connect with USB from my desktop Linux PC. Ideally, I'd prefer to not install any proprietary drivers and use all free software. Also, I think it'd be convenient to have it work independently from a computer, so having an included keyboard would be nice, I imagine.

I have a new small parts organizer that I hope to store a collection of resistors and capacitors, op-amps and other small electronics prototyping parts of different values. I would like to print labels for each drawer.

I'm looking at this one: brother-usa.com/products/ptd61

Anyone have any experience with this label printer from Brother with Linux or standalone?

In my personal way to #UnplugTrump, I've encountered my personal nemesis.

Bringing an HP Envy 4525 to life does not work. It should run on Kubuntu 24.10 LTS.

With hplip I can only bring the printer online. Scanning is not shown.

I've tried hplip of Canonicals repo (3.22) and the installer (3.25) from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing.

It is the last remain we would need a WinOS in out home networks. That's insane and I can't stay with that, even when we just print 50 pages/y. In these times the need of the Scanner to digitalize public paper is more essential than printing, as we ourselves just send mails.

So I need some support, proving Linux will replace Windows even as Workstation and professional office environment.

And for the future. Do you know open source printer with native Linux Support?

J'ai réparé mon imprimante matricielle ! 🎉

I know printers are hot topic :) and I'm very happy with my Brother color laser. I'm lucky not to have to worry about toner cost.

I've been asked to recommend printer for HS kid for whom cartridge cost will matter. I'm still thinking Brother Color Laser is best choice - as cartridges do last a long time.

Does anyone on the fedi have any other suggestions? I'm thinking of buying them the printer itself at least and the first round of cartridges. #PrinterCartridges #Printer #CostEffective

I recently bought a small Brother laser printer because I am sick to death of paying a small fortune in ink for our old Canon MX726 - which admittedly has given sterling service over quite a number of years. Mind you, I we do very little printing these days anyway but I just have had enough of buying ink. The Brother printer is fast, gives great quality, if a tad noisy. And was pretty cheap too.

It's that time of the year again :) The 2025 Update is here. With Gemini AI writing half of the article.

"This is the third year in a row that I’ve published a story recommending you just stop thinking about printers and buy whatever random Brother laser printer is on sale, and nothing has happened in the miserably user-hostile printer industry to change my recommendation in that time." — Nilay Patel, The Verge
