I just got back from a gorgeous week visiting fam in Belfast. When I go back “home” (despite not having lived there full time since 2007) it always gives me a sense of relaxation and comfort I can get nowhere else. During the pandemic, I got stuck there for about 6 months with only a small bag of belongings, which was a good reminder of how little we really need in life. Around that time, I took an outdoor survival and foraging course with a few friends at the Finnebrogue estate, and these are a couple of photos I took when we were shown how to start a fire.

September 15, 1983: When I finally attained that summit, I checked my watch and discovered that it was almost 9:00. I had consumed two hours in hiking two-and-a-half miles. At the rate I had been covering ground the past couple of days, Katahdin was beginning to once more achieve the status of fairy tale.

Beneath a bright, almost cloudless light blue sky we are looking out at a scene bathed in bright sunshine. We are standing atop a lofty mountain covered with light gray rock outcrops and boulders, stunted spruce and fir and a leafy alpine plant that has turned red with the autumn. The rocks are covered with pale green and darker green lichen. The crest descends to a low sag also covered with rock outcrops and alpine vegetation, then climbs to another peak of our mountain. That peak is more wooded, although there are open areas along the top and sides. The rest of the mountainsides are heavily wooded. There is another lofty mountain beyond this peak to the right. Its face is also heavily wooded but has extensive open rock cliffs. Other ranges cascade towards the horizon.

Yesterday’s hike was a scenic loop from Cónchar down the Río Dúrcal & back over the hills. The valley was absolutely breathtaking - lush, quiet & full of untouched beauty.

Following a little-used path winding along the river, soaking in the peaceful vibes… until we hit a snag. The river, swollen with Sierra Nevada meltwater, was way too wild to cross safely. After a few failed attempts to find a good spot, we made the smart call to turn back.

Misty Storelva in Norway, August 2023. We had to cross this river on a cold, wet day. Luckily, we found a shallow—but wide—spot to get across. If we hadn’t, we might’ve had to take a pretty long detour, possibly even retrace our old tracks back toward civilization—something I always try to avoid.
