I'm a mid-level #linux amateur.
I recently switched from a little bit of everything but mainly #debian to #ArchLinux. The great think is the possibility to be light and have the right setup.
with #pacman and #aur almost everything is there.
i do web, office, virtualization, and it want ok on day to day computer.
The small frustration is that if you want more, choose #init for example...is there a way inside linux to do #lfs?
But in fact building a day by day #os with #freebsd seems demanding.

LFS is so tricky. You *think* your big binary files are being cleverly handled so as not to bloat your local and remote drive space, but…No. Nope.

Afaict, the only use for git-lfs is to ensure that when someone *CLONES* your repo, they will get the minimum number of large files fetched.

If you are using it, look into `git lfs prune` This will actually remove a bunch of duplicates in your local .git/lfs directory and save you a tonne of space.

Is anyone having trouble pushing to Codeberg?

I was getting "connection closed by remote host" errors.

Turns out my git-lfs was old, and Codeberg has some strict ssh settings.

To fix this, read: codeberg.org/Codeberg/Communit

Short version, do this (once per repo) before pushing:
git config --local lfs.sshTransfer never

Ensure lfs version is > 3.5.x

I was told, a few days ago, that git lfs only saves space on my local drive but that the server (origin, i guess) grows full of file versions.

E.g i push 3d.blend, it's 10mb.
I edit it, push again, server now reports 20mb used. Then 30mb etc.

Is this the expected lfs behaviour? Can someone point me to where this is documented?

I'd much rather there be one 3d.blend file locally AND remotely. Is that even possible to do?

I don't think people realize this issue about lfs.

@Codeberg I am using lfs to avoid bloat, but every time I touch my blend file, add, commit and push my repo, the filesize grows by the amount of the blend file.

The blend file is 7mb.
Push 1 : 7 mb
Push 2: 14 mb !
Push 3: 21 mb !

Is this expected? 😱

"As the Trump administration’s actions increase economic uncertainty in Maine, the cancellation of two USDA programs will hurt Maine #farmers, #families and #schools in the state.

"The administration’s U.S. Department of Agriculture has canceled the Local Food Purchase Assistance (#LFPA) program and the Local Food for Schools (#LFS) program. Both programs have provided funds to buy food from local farmers and distribute it to #FoodBanks and schools across the state.

"Maine now stands to lose $1.25 million in funding over the next three years, which equates to approximately 500,000 to 600,000 pounds of fresh produce that will no longer be available to families facing food insecurity, according to Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine. 'These changes pose real challenges to the charitable food network’s ability to provide nutritious food for people across Maine,' said Heather Paquette, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank.

"Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Congressman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-N.C.) and more than 70 other members of Congress are demanding answers in a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. Pingree and her colleagues said that these cuts hurt farmers and strip food away from people and families who need it.

"'At a time when farmers are facing increased input costs and significant uncertainty due to the indiscriminate funding freeze on certain USDA funds, and when grocery costs have not come down and more families are relying on food banks and school meals, it is reckless and cruel to cancel LFPA and LFS awards to states,' they wrote.

"Additionally, cuts to the Emergency Food Assistance Program are expected to reduce Good Shepherd Food Bank’s distribution of staple foods by an estimated 250,000 pounds per month starting next month. These reductions come at a time when food insecurity remains high and grocery prices continue to strain household budgets.

"Maine lawmakers are considering #LD415, a bill aimed at expanding investment in the #MainersFeedingMainers program. This initiative connects local farms with #FoodPantries and meal sites, providing state-funded support to help offset the loss of federal funds.

"Everyday Mainers can provide support by donating to local food banks, volunteering, or advocating for policies that support food security."

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture is ending two national programs that help food banks and schools in Maine — and around the country — purchase produce from local farmers.

"USDA told Maine officials and partners late last week that it has terminated the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program. It helped #GoodShepherd Food Bank buy produce from about 100 Maine farmers, which is then distributed to local food banks around the state.

"'That program is incredibly important to the state of Maine, both in food today — food that we source and distribute today — and in food tomorrow, which is the economic viability for those 100 #farmers and for our partner agencies to experience fresh, nutritious produce," said Good Shepherd President Heather Paquette.

"At the same time, Paquette said the food bank recently learned that USDA will stop delivering about 1 million pounds of food through the Emergency Food Assistance Program to Maine. Those deliveries are on hold for Good Shepherd — and food banks around the country — through at least June.

"Paquette said the USDA delivery represented about 20% of food that Good Shepherd moves around the state.

"The cuts — both to government food deliveries and to funds that Good Shepherd used to buy local produce — are concerning, Paquette said, because more Mainers are experiencing #FoodInsecurity.

"Our need is up every year," she said. 'This year we distributed 10% more food cases than we distributed the year before that, and that year was 10% over the [prior] year. So we're experiencing double-digit need increase in the state of Maine.'

"A spokesperson for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry said the state received about $1.3 million for the Local Food Purchase Assistance program.

"USDA has also terminated the Local Food for Schools program, which provided more than $720,000 last year to Maine schools. Schools used those funds to buy food directly from local farmers to serve in their cafeterias.

"The program provided a big boost to the state's farmers, because more than 100,000 students eat at Maine schools every day, said Anna Korsen of the food security non-profit Full Plates Full Potential.

"'That has a huge impact on local economies, on #SmallFarms, and it's just better for kids," she said. 'The food's healthier, they're getting fresh, local foods in the school cafeteria.'

"A spokesperson for Maine's Department of Education said the state was expected to receive nearly $2.8 million for the Local #FoodForSchools program over the next three years. The funding was supposed to be disbursed later this spring.

"Maine still has a statewide local food purchasing program for schools. But Korsen said the federal program provided more purchasing power for Maine schools. In 2023 before Maine received federal #LFS funding, schools in the Pine Tree State spent just more than $168,000 on local food, Korsen said.

"These USDA programmatic cuts are separate from those that the department is making at the University of Maine System [which were just reversed]. And unlike those impacting UMaine, the termination of USDA's local purchasing programs affects food banks and schools around the country."

LFS steht für Linux From Scratch und bietet seit 1999 eine Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung zur Erstellung eines Linux-Systems nach eigenen Vorstellungen von Grund auf aus den Quelltexten. Vor einigen Tagen wurden LFS 12.3 und BLFS 12.3 freigegeben. Sowohl LFS als auch BLFS werden in je zwei Varianten – mit und ohne systemd – angeboten.

It's been almost 2 years since I touched NixOS so might as well play around with it again.

I'll start googling up some more & I'm also gonna be looking on #distrowatch later but I gotta go eat my midnight snacks, lol.
