Remy RoseA patron asked our makerspace to design and CNC mill a replica of the Gemeente-Energiebedrijf sign found all over Amsterdam. They brought us a screenshot of a stock photo and some 6mm thick aluminum to cut it out from. Here's a first rough draft, CAD/CAM in #FreeCAD and milled in a #Snapmaker Artisan. Stefano
Part 3 of building the DIY seismograph. So continuing on the moving arm concept, I settled on using a servo motor as this could easily be driven by the Arduino. I had to make the arm very light so as not to put too much pressure on the small servo motor I was going to use. Here is the model of the arm. Although I went back and forth with different ends to hold the pen, ultimately I ended up going with this clip. Modeled in #freecad #maker #diy #earthquake #arduino #servomotor #seismograph

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi
Just out of curiosity, what kind of workflows do you #freecad or other CAD package users have for simple stuff you need to model for 3D printing or CNC'ing?

I start with a crude Post-It note version and try to get all the measurements in that phase, so when I get to the good part, I can just keep on drawing without killing the flow.

#cad

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi
Next I wanted to deal with a very long time annoyance with Striker Xtreme, the *bestest pinball machine in the whole wide world. I've observed several different SX games having the same issue, where they at random fail to get the ball up from the goalie upkicker.

Earlier we tried several different upkicker models, until the problem went away, which made me wonder about the original cause. It'd seem that the ball lands at the bottom of the whole kicker scoop, but the actual kicker solenoid's plunger is almost 1cm lower. This appears to send the ball flying up, but bouncing from the scoop walls, causing a lot of random movement.

I modelled a tip for the solenoid that basically rests against the ball and has a concaved top. This design causes the solenoid to just lift the ball straight up instead of kicking it and causing it to bounce around the scoop walls.

After installing this thing the first 25 test runs had zero failures. In this game the failure rate was at around 1 to 4 or more.

#pinrepair #freecad

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi
As I swapped out the winter tyres for summer ones today, I checked out the hubcaps I made last fall and they all were in perfect shape.

I replaced my pinball hauling vehicle last fall and I had gotten used to the Volkswagen T5's minimalistic hub caps. Ford Transit had had those at some point but all that was sold these days was beaten up ones for very high price on eBay.

So I recreated the hubcaps in FreeCAD and printed them out of ASA. They're soft enough to snap on without violence, but they also stick on just as well as the Volkswagen version.
