"The Pleasant Pheasant" teableau for 03/02/25
I felt like I needed a teableau with a name like an English pub. Or an indie bookstore in California. Or a Panamanian-American jazz drummer's instrumental single.

Billy Cobham - Spectrum
It’s not just that George Duke is in there…this could almost be a Zappa album. I don’t know who influenced who, but there was definitely come cross-pollination going on.
Also rather fun when you hear a song (in this case, Spectrum) and realize that the very distinctive bass line was sampled by someone…here, Massive Attack’s Safe From Harm.

Billy Cobham - Crosswinds (Atlantic, 1974)
I'm grateful for my teenage friend, bodhisattva, and drummer Seth, who was rightfully obsessed with Billy Cobham and turned me on (and who sadly departed this world soon thereafter). Cobham's 2nd solo record features a fiery John Abercrombie and is the source of many hip-hop samples including Gang Starr and SOM 93 'Til Infinity.

Milt Jackson - Sunflower
1972 CTI release that’s an interesting transition, kind of just pre-Fusion. Lots of talent onboard including Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Herbie Hancock (keys), Ron Carter (bass), Billy Cobham (drums), Jay Berliner (guitar)…and, well, strings, tastefully done.
A mellow, rather nice set.
