Discovering the #fediverse gives me the same feelings #linux did years ago. The endless choice, excitement of discovery, clash of philosophies and a community.

I spent years #distrohopping from #ubuntu , #arch , #voidlinux , #nixos etc and then back to arch. Also spent a long time switching desktop environments and window managers like i3.

I started on #lemmy and #mastodon . What do I try next? #selfhost an #activitypub server? Which one?

The Daily WTF · Ticking Toks and ExpertiseKnowing the kinds of readers we have here, I strongly suspect that if you drew a Venn diagram of "TDWTF Readers" and "TikTok Users" those circles wouldn't overlap at all. But TikTok is in the news, and because my partner uses TikTok, I'm getting second hand smoke of all of this, I think there's some interesting things to talk about here. If you've been avoiding this news, good for you. For a long recap, Ars can bring up up to date.. But as a quick recap: TikTok is owned by Bytedance, which is based in China, and subject to Chinese laws. TikTok, like every other social media company, is basically spyware, tracking your behavior to sell your eyeballs to advertisers. Over the past few years, all three branches of the US government have decided that the "Chinese ownership" is the problem here (not so much the spying), and passed a law to ban it unless a US company buys it. The whole thing has turned into an idiotic political football, with Biden saying that his waning days of the Presidency wouldn't enforce the ban anyway, and then the whole thing turns into a Trumpist political football as the incoming President is playing Calvinball and making decrees that he did not (at the time) have any authority to make in the first place.

My #Pleroma instance, Coder Dansu (dansu.org), presently uses Pleroma BE for the back-end and #Soapbox FE for the front-end.

I updated both today to the latest git sources. This was the first full update in a few months. It was more difficult than I'd have liked due to the need to resync some Soapbox FE patches. However, everything seems to be working now.

I've considered switching to a different Fediverse setup at times. However, if I did this, I'd lose everything in the current data.

This is a #Fediverse issue that should be looked at at some point. There ought to be a standard which permits migration of an instance from one type of Fediverse server to another type with minimum loss.

On the bright side, I like how my instance works with my patches applied. That is a plus of both FOSS and Fedi. You can be part of a broader community and still decide things for yourself.

Another plus is that my Pleroma setup continues to be friendly in terms of system resources. It's a bird-like site which is quite light. System load isn't a fright.

Thruthsocial.com è il social di Donald Trump, se assomiglia molto ai social del fediverso è proprio perchè usa il codice di mastodon e non solo, l'interfaccia usata è quella di , usata da molte istanze, questa scelta perchè l'autore Alex Gleason lavorava proprio per Trump!! Ora è ingaggiato da Jack Dorsey per lavorare a Nostr:

- Contributor di Poast, una piattaforma per neo nazisti e paragonabile all'ex Kiwi Farm

Sulla base di questo, ho cancellato completamente la mia istanza di soapbox per rispettare i miei principi morali e spero che lo facciate anche voi.

Consiglio di passare ad **Elk**, un frontend alternativo a Mastodon e in molti aspetti migliore di Soapbox.

The rift happening at the , is pretty worrying.
Not that conversation was the point forte over there, but it will become a CNN-Fox News rift, where one side of politics talks to each other on the bird one and the other on the elephant one.
And despite how much I despise watching Fox, living in a bubble is bad for either side of politics.
