Given the state of the world [waves vaguely at everything], Assholes: A Theory by Aaron James seemed a particularly relevant read. It's been on my TBR since 2012. Some of the info is a bit dated, but I'm afraid the main themes will ALWAYS be current. It's worth noting that a certain orange blowhard wasn't yet in conversations about presidential nominees at the time of publication. So far (1/4 done), he's only name-checked once.

How do whistleblowers get a new career after the organization? In "After the organization: Symbolic capital and negative expert knowledge in post-whistleblowing careers" Thomas Olesen develops the concept 'negative expert knowledge' to explain how whistleblowers' negative experiences can function as a resource enabling new careers after the organization.

Crucially, education is civilization-building. Education is the process through which the body of knowledge and culture that we have been accumulating for thousands of years passes from our generation to the next one. It is the steel making up an uninterrupted chain of cultural transmission, accretion, and renewal, stretching back to the emergence of language — back when humans first became truly human.

In my data analysis and visualization class this week, I'm introducing the students to interactive mapping with geopandas and folium. We're going to be using open data from Massachusetts to ask questions about the spatial distribution of religion. Here's a map of the places of worship in the state (according to the database on the open data portal). #DataViz #SociologyOfReligion #Sociology #Mapping #Python

In "Parental unemployment and children's well-being at school: The role of duration, reemployment, and socioeconomic status" Simon Skovgaard Jensen, Michael Kühhirt and Felix Weiss examine a dataset covering in principle all pupils in public schools in Denmark and, surprisingly, find very little evidence for parental unemployment affects children's school well-being.
