So all themes are things that I naturally express. My ideals. Occasionally, the characters say something "theme" oriented, but this is their choice. I may tweak something because it fits the flow.Again, the only times I have planned a theme, it hasn't gone well. My characters come first. I start them out with a set of characteristics, and they grow from there. Inevitably, they grow in a direction where predetermined themes do not fit them.* Kao had a deep sense of the injustice of the world. * For Tomo and Kan-chan, it's found family * Tomo is also wrapped up in the meaning of monogamy and polyamory. * Shiro was self-actualization vs. duty to family * Ume and Shishi are too selfish to have broad themes. * Arisu and Saeki was finding how to be yourself and balancing that with your partners needs. Is there anything that bores you about any of your characters? They like to greet each other like proper Japanese people. It is terribly boring when I want to get to their conversation. I don't write that part besides saying they greeted each other, so not too bad.It can also be boring, put some of Ume's high-flying rambling talks in a proper order for readers.And having a conversation with Kan-chan can be slow. What rôle does religion play in your writing?Buddhism and Shinto beliefs play a large role in my stories. They are the basis of the magic system. Most of the characters enter the stage as humanist skeptics, but in the face of their experiences embrace those belief systems. Shino probably plays a bigger role of the two.If I ever write something set in the West, it will probably have a blending of shamanism, mysticism, and esoteric Christianity. Nothing fundies would approve of.If anyone ever challenges me over cultural appropriation, I will just respond that I am a Buddhist Animist, so I am not appropriating anything. (with some exceptions for tropes such as cat-ears/otherkin)Kakuriyo is a fantastic concoction of my own, drawing on creepypasta, urban legends, Japanese mythology, and my imagination.Physics as they affect the characters are normal, the air is breathable; they don’t go flying into space; they get hungry, etc. Astronomy is all over the place, however, in Kakuriyo with little effect except visual.PTSD is toned down. Capitalism works, i.e. the characters are struggling financially.
