On this rainy Saturday, I’ve been #3dprinting a lot of radius gauges to verify dimensions on a part I’m trying to model in #freecad. Of course, I’ve had to model the larger gauges in FreeCAD as well because those sizes aren’t as readily available on the various printing sites.

Now that I've moved over here to Hachyderm, I suppose it's time for a new introduction.

I'm a mechanical engineer and cyclist that is interested in just about everything and constantly learning. My project list is forever growing, but most of it is taken care of by #FreeCAD, #octoprint, #3dPrinting, #python, #obsidian, and a variety of other #foss tools.

I'm also a #bluegrass and #ska musician, playing #guitar, #UprightBass, and #mandolin. I never said I was great, but I have a lot of fun making music.

I like to try and help people wherever I can because a lot of people have helped me over the years. The #fediverse is full of wonderful people, and I've learned so much and had such positive interactions with people from all over the world since joining in 2022.

Let's keep it going!

I completed two repair projects this week using #FreeCAD:

• A taillight‑to‑bicycle‑seat adapter
• A replacement part for our clothes‑drying rack

#FreeCAD saturday – more #Bialetti.

This time: a stand and extension for the funnel of #LaMokina. Was the level of detail on the funnel necessary? No. But it was fun to do.

Stairs? Improved.
Not wobbly anymore, and much more comfortable to walk on.
Also 33° elevation, instead of 60°.
The only thing I purchased? The 4000x48x280 board for the sides.

Robo had originally the bottom speaker grille and the speaker destroyed. The speaker got replaced but I had forgotten about the grille. Its main function is to prevent kids poking the speakers and transportation damage.

Seeing the bare speaker I quickly whipped out this grille with #freecad and printed it of ASA. Even at just 3mm thick it's surprisingly sturdy.

[EN] @MonadoXR with libsurvive tracking works well now even with two Lighthouse setup.
@FreeCAD XR workbench does not need SteamVR at all now for Lighthouse-based devices.
Other news: the workbench now allows to creation of Draft polylines, including filled faces and point snapping.

I was wondering : is there any other vehicle being primary developed with #blender ? #b3d
with the #shifti #veli @Shifti_SC I use #freecad to communicate with others when necessary (for STEP f.ex.) but the main work is done in blender from the ideas to the CNC cut, measurements for the workshop etc
as we are still in prototype phase, it's very useful to go quickly, copy paste change, replace, redo
and I can also do rendering and videos ! (damn blender is magic !! )

The world of FOSS CAD is in dire state.

I tried #FreeCAD and it’s rough. It's got decent sketching and constraints but UI takes some getting used to. Some things are extremely hard. Building a wire in 3d for a sweep (see image) is nigh impossible. In principle it’s easy, there are like 3 minutes videos on YouTube how to do it but I couldn't do it. FreeCAD fails and thrown cryptic messages at me that don't give me any clue what went wrong or how to fix it. Definitely not FreeCAD-beginner-friendly. It also crashed more times in a few days than probably everything else I used in the last year combined.

I had to resort to #CadQuery. It seems better in a few departments. Size constrains are absent but since everything is in code your variables are your size constraints. Relational constraints are way less intuitive than in FreeCAD. But I can work with it much more efficiently than with FreeCAD. It's all Python though so… Oh well.
