Very excited to have filed a formal complaint against #Facebook & #Instagram today under the #DigitalServicesAct.

Together with @bitsoffreedom, @Freiheitsrechte & Convocation Design+Research, @edri represents an Irish user and found that #Meta uses #DeceptiveDesign patterns to discourage people from choosing the #newsfeed that's not based on #profiling.

That newsfeeds option is a key requirement under the DSA and deceptive design is prohibited. So there you go.

Dear change.org,

The first screenshot is a deceptive design (the third option, “I only want to hear about this petition’s progress”, is missing, on purpose, to coerce people into signing up for notifications about other petitions by bundling them in with the one they’re supporting).

The second screenshot is just plain old incompetence.

New terms cause a screen-covering dialog asking to drop services and lose connections, or continue as before. So far so good.

There is also however a "more options" button, less prominent of course. Now the deceptive pattern: click it, and .. you are brought to your landing page as if nothing happened. No config screen, no nothing.

Rationale is that they hope you forget that config now. So they can keep sucking you dry of #PII.
