So Claus Peter Schnorr claims to have achieved a significant speedup in integer factorisation, essentially destroying the venerable RSA crypto system.

That's, uh, a Big Deal, if it holds up.

Big If, though. Schnorr is afaik a big name in town, and there are known weaknesses in RSA already, necessitating bigger and bigger keys, but it's still a Very Big If.
