Plot twist: the spectators were all deaf people, including a French guy who didn't understand a word because of the lack of an interpreter.
@elCelio, hmm, interpreters… well, if that French person were instead British (I can only speak for British here; other nationalities may be relevant), it seems very likely to me that there'd be an issue of ASL vs. BSL there.
